The Opala was introduced to the Brazilian public at the 1968 Sao Paulo Motor Show. Its body was inspired by the German Opel Rekord, but with the styling and mechanics of the North American Chevy Impala, which led the manufacturer to call it the acronym Opala (Opel+Impala). He was quickly accepted by the public, becoming a recognized model.
